The Slate was designed and released to the Mercenary Clans in 3320 as another potential weapon in their ongoing conflict with Unification.
Portals leading to Unification’s dimension had been opened three times using a Chroniode and in response to each attack, the Mercenary Clans drove the Unification Army troops back through the portals. Scientists throughout the galaxy were working around the clock to unravel the processes for controlling the portals but they still had some work to do. ChronoPower, Inc. developed a control device that enabled a team of specialists to close the portals after the most recent widespread attacks from Unification.

The independent manufacturer GDI unveiled the Slate mecha in 3320 to aid in the galaxy’s defense against the next threat. GDI has been manufacturing weapons and equipment for light mecha for over two hundred years, and their initial foray into mecha production began with the ubiquitous Warhorse. While this mecha has a presence in every major, minor, and even bandit army in the Galaxy, it has always been a secondary project for GDI. The company shifted its focus to improve their mecha when they developed the Humbaba in 3314.
After the success of the Humbaba, GDI took steps to tap into new markets and decided to produce an affordable Crystal based mecha. Always working to break new ground, CEO Ian Deeks directed his team to use data collected from the Mercenary Clan’s recent large scale battles to craft an AI that could utilize technology captured in those battles. The A.I. constructed for the Slate is a unique hybrid, codenamed Huntsman.
The galactic menace known as Evil Santa returned on a special mission and attacked the clans in 3318. His army used a wide range of specialised ice weaponry, providing the perfect opportunity for enterprising engineers to gather information about these weapons. Hoping to discover how his machines functioned, GDI sent teams to recover any materials they could find at the locations of battles with Evil Santa and his minions.
GDI also traded considerable resources in exchange for the scrapped remains of Evil Santa’s mecha, in order to study it closer. They are not releasing this research to the public, however they did discover some valuable information about how to optimize Ice weaponry and they utilized that when programming the Huntsman A.I.
The Huntsman contains an anti-mech virus suite that is quite effective in shutting down an opponent's weapon systems and forcing an A.I. restart. Target assist programming gives the Slate an above average degree of Precision, while scanning technologies search for any weakened armor plating on an enemy in order for the pilot to exploit any one-shot Crit-Kill opportunities.
Rounding out the electronics package are two avenues GDI is already known for - multi-target Splash effects and increased yield from Missile weapons. While this mecha does utilize recent breakthroughs in missile technologies, the Slate’s design focuses on Ice as its primary weapon system. The Huntsman contains five ports for additional equipment to enhance the original programming.
The Chassis for this mecha houses a wide variety of defensive systems. From the beginning of the project, GDI’s CEO, Ian Deeks, directed the engineers to use the stable quad motive configuration that was so effective in the Humbaba design. The design team was able to replicate the configuration, however the more bulky Crystal based design requires more volume in the frame’s interior.
The quad design of the Chassis is an ideal stable platform for the deployment of Ice and Missile weapons. The low profile of this design aids to counter secondary attacks against it. Seven slots for custom equipment enable the Slate to be configured for nearly any mission.
Ablative armor reduces the effectiveness of Laser attacks against the Slate. Threat-analyzing sensors warn of incoming area attacks, allowing the pilot to avoid direct hits from these type attacks. Using this system, the Slate can evade much of the damage inflicted by traditional Trample and Splash attacks, not by physically moving out of the path of incoming fire but by projecting a dummy signal that can fool enemy mecha targeting locks. A set of five ports for heavy shielding modules give the pilot the ability to protect against all weapon types.
Designers chose to use the Humbaba’s engine design, the Goliath Fusion Core when building the engine for the Slate. For a Crystal based version, the Goliath had to have a few modifications in order to fit inside the mecha’s interior. Engineers refer to this as a Goliath model-B but it is essentially the Crystal tech twin of the original.
This massive powerplant provides enough power to the motive system to move the Slate at the combat optimal speed with enough upgrades, a speed that other Crystal based mecha of this size cannot match. The model-B’s sturdy construction is well shielded from Projectile attacks and carries a pair of Auto-Repair nanobot swarms.
Another of the Goliath’s features that is welcomed by pilots is the considerable array of 3X overload capacitors for the weapons suite. Fully upgraded, one third of all shots fired will be overloaded. The massive Goliath Core uses a great deal of the available space in the chassis, yet still has room to add six custom modules of performance enhancing equipment.
The Slate mecha is GDI’s first independent project since the Warhorse. Working with General Nova and the NovaStar engineers on the Humbaba produced favorable results that GDI was then able to translate into building their first Crystal-based design. CEO Ian Deeks has once again broken new ground and many pilots are responding positively to this new addition to the 100 ton mecha class.
Chris was a true mecha pilot. Often found running his famous Double Rainbow formation while crushing enemy lines for the legendary mercenary clan Phoenix. While not fighting for his clan, he was often found on the training grounds with his Slate, getting of trick ice shots while running amok across the battle field. In later times ran with Black Star to gold and glory.
As of Today a new legend s being told around the Mecha Galaxy. Joe Kump has become renowned as a legendary pilot of the 100 ton Slate Class Mecha. In the hands of a pilot like Kump the key abilities of the Slate - potent shielding, a strong synergy with ice based and freezing attacks, and the chance for instantaneously deadly critical hits - all reach their fullest potential. At that full potential the Slate is a machine built not only for damage and destruction, but also keeping the pilot alive and the precision craftsmanship of the Slate intact. Kump has a long history in the mecha galaxy, first arriving on the King of the mountain battle scene in 3263 and taking part in the second ever clan war. Kump's prowess with the Slate is as old as the Slate itself; as Kump boasted the first combat ready Slate known in the mecha galaxy. The abilities of the Slate would be tested shortly after it's creation in 3320 as humanity sought to fight the Unification; a conflict against an interdimensional horror where Kump's abilities with the Slate would serve him, and humanity, well. Kump fights under the banner of the Northwind Dragons, where he is known as the "Chosen of Odin." Sporting a tell tale sigil of the three eyed raven, many mecha pilots who've engaged with Kump would be hard pressed to say if they fought against man, or the God of War himself. The Chosen of Odin, the Hammer, the Point of the Spear, the Mail about the Fist, the Shield on the Arm, and the Flight of the Arrows. Joe Kump has been known by many names, but one certainty persists; Kump's legend will continue to grow through out the galaxy.
