Out in the Saggitarious arm lies the Beninn cluster, named so by the predominantly Western African colonists that settled it some centuries back. This entity consists of eighteen solar systems in an ovoid shape about six light years in the longest axis and four in the shortest. The clusters sole portal, on the planet of Cotonou leads to the Illyrian Hegemony. To avoid being swallowed by them, the cluster government keeps the portal heavily guarded against Illyrian adventurism.

Most of the systems are pretty normal, and the populations there have settled to agriculture, fishing and light industry.

The one system that stands out is the Borgou system.

It have two planets in the liquid water range. The outermost, Parakau, is a bit cooler than old Earth but as the axial tilt is negligible it has a nice mediterranean climate in a 30 degree belt around the equator.

The other planet, Kandi, is one light minute closer to the sun and have an average surface temperature of approximately 40 degrees Celsius. But while it have quite a bit of water and a negligible axial tilt it is in most particulars a hellhole. For starters, the surface gravity is about 2.1 G, and its rotational period is 360 standard hours. This give a weather pattern of massive storms coupled with extreme rainfalls. Temperatures on the backside drops toward 50 Celsius below freezing and sunside temperatures in excess of 110 Celsius on dry land.

But the reason for the planet's high gravity is that it has an abundance of heavy elements. To mine these successfully the Ouidah Mining consortium was created. It took decades to get the orbital infrastructure up and running. Farms, smelters, recreation facilities, repairbays, medical centers and solar collectors were just the start. Then there was the manufacturing plants, and of course a dedicated anti pirate patrol to protect this huge Investment.

The actual mining had to be done underground and by mining Mechs. Those were purpose built by an subsidiary division of the Ouidah Mining, Ouidah Mechworks. The output is taken up to the surface and stored for collection during the night time when the weather is less extreme than during the day.

But one band of pirates managed to slip in past the patrol, and started raiding the surface depots. One thing was the loss of materials, but the miners were now stuck in the mines and their supplies would not last forever.

The regular army was not willing to brave the surface conditions, so Mercenaries were needed. The team dispatched to find some struck gold when they encountered Ben Rail of the Death`s Collector`s.

Warned by the description of the surface conditions he brought a force consisting of craftsmen Mechs, Vizi`s and Nephilax`es. The wisdom of using the lighter Mechs proved itself as examination of the raid sites showed several Heavy raider mechs that had simply collapsed under the stresses of more than doubling their weight. Even so, the terrain, gravity and the weather were severe challenges, even for his troops. Finding the pirates was not an trivial exercise either, but by placing monitoring equipment at the depots he was able to spot the raiders. At the third heist his forces were able to track the pirates to their ship, and a few well placed shots made any take-off impossible. All that was left was to call on the pirates to surrender.

Most of them understood their predicament and gave up, the rest stood no chance against Ben`s seasoned troops.

After the all clear was sent, several of the mining Mechs came to collect the ores. Ben could hardly believe his sensors when he saw them. While his Mechs had been forced to move carefully and slowly to avoid breakdowns, the mining Mechs, some of them massing in excess of 90 tons was moving at what would have been a good speed for an Antithesis in regular gravity, and they were hauling at least their own mass of ores besides.

Up at the station he asked to speak to the engineers of the Ouidah Mechworks, and later to the board of directors. He suggested that they should start building combat Mechs, as their engineering was clearly up to the task, and build the heaviest they could. They were hesitant at first, they had no experience in the art of warfare and what was needed for such Mechs. Ben assured them that he had plenty of know-how, and would be more than willing to act as an consultant on the project.

Thus were the Xango born.

If seen from a distance without any comparing features the Xango is easily misidentified as a Banshee. It is only when one comes close the massiveness of the Mech becomes apparent.

Weighing in at 110 tons it defies what most engineering experts held as possible as little as a decade ago.

As for all 100+ ton Mechs the main problem was to get legs, joints and muscular strong enough to not only move it, but also withstand the rigors of maneuvering under combat conditions.

The Ouidah Mechworks used bundles of hollow core FerroChromeTitan alloys for the internal structure. This required the body, arms and legs to be wider than what is normal, but the actual weight is less than that of a standard skeleton of comparable strength. The joints are unusually wide as well, reducing the pressure pr square inch to less than what an Namtar have to handle. To actually move the joints, the Xango have both massive myomer bundles for pulling and electro-magnetic driven pneumatics for both pushing and pulling. This double action takes a bit of piloting to become familiar with, but will allow the Xango to keep the same pace as most other BFMs.

The reduced weight of the skeleton and the unusually wide body of the Xango also give room for more armor than any other Mech so far had been able to carry. This armor is made of an especially heat resistant alloy, and should eventually be able to shrug off three quarters of all heat based attacks.

Having enough power to do everything a pilot wants the Mech to do is paramount, and the Xango is equipped with a massive Mono III powerplant, normally used to provide power for a large city. Even this seeming abundance of power is barely up to all the tasks the powerplant have to handle.

The Xango have five overload capacitor banks, both the older 2x and 3x in addition to the newer 1.3x, 1.5x and 1.6x. While it is unlikely that all of them will engage at the same time, if they do, the resulting 1872% blast should reduce most opponents to slag. Another portion of the energy is reserved for increasing the output of the Lasers. Fully developed the Xango will deliver Laser blasts of 150% of regular strength. The remaining energy is deemed sufficient to power up to eight additional engine modules.

Some pilots might wonder why the Xango was given the Bariba 2-6 A.I. By itself it confers no additional targeting solutions. That is the task of the additional eight Cockpit modules it eventually will have room for. The Bariba`s main function is to look for the moment when the fire might be split against several targets, and fully developed the Xango should get both Forking and Wide Forking effects at approximately every fifth shot fired.

Despite the speed of the Xango, it is in no way an nimble Mech. To get it out of harms way a pilot will have to carefully select appropriate Chassis modules. Fully developed the Xango will have room for up to seven of them.

The Fulani Shield system gives the Xango adequate protection from most attacks. Specially designed to handle the threat of Wide Fork attacks, it will reduce such strikes by more than seventy percent when fully upgraded. To handle other threats it have room for an additional six Shield modules.

Legendary Pilots

  • Ben Rail

    Ben Rail

Ben Rail is already a Legend. He really didn’t need the craftsmen to tell him that but here we are doing it anyway. Because he deserves it. Ben is a member of the elite Death’s Collectors where he regularly scores top positions in DIV 1.

As if being the top of DIV 1 with a hangar filled with 30+ Nephilax wasn’t enough, he’s also one of three members of the super elite 400 club.

But wait, there’s more: He’s the holder of the one of a kind Reverse Engineering Medal for being the pilot to figure out the real world max values of Dodge, Precision, and baseline hit probabilities.

Finally putting the icing on the cake, he heavily influenced the design the Xango, one of Mecha Galaxies most powerful large mecha. Ben Rail is one of Mecha Galaxies greatest and most influential pilots, and that’s all there is to say really.

  • Roy Cheah

    Roy Cheah

Roy Cheah has been a staple of the mecha galaxy for years, making a notable showing at the inaugural clan tournament and King of the mountain event. It was his victory in the second ever clan wars that really put his first mark in the mecha universe. Since then, Roy's battlefield achievements have spanned galactic decades and few contests of note have not seen Cheah as a ranking competitor.
